Sleeping is important for our life. Comfortable sleeping keeps our health.
We approach the theme as "biomechanics of 眠" using a Kanji character denoting sleeping.

Research of mechanical conditions to induce sleeping
This study focuses on vibration as the critical sleep-inducing factor. We measured the vibration acceleration on running trains with 3-axis acceleration sensor about 10 railway lines. The sensor is fixed in the trains as illustrated in Fig.1. From the vibration measurement, a relationship is found between the number of sleeping passengers and vibration patterns. Fig.2 shows the frequency spectrums of the vibration acceleration. Low frequency components of vibration and the numbers of sleeping passengers indicate strong positive correlation by statistical analysis(Fig.3).

Sleeping effect by oscillating motion
 Prototype exciter device is shown in Fig.1. The device generates low frequency vibrations in the vertical direction. Now we are researching the detail of sleep-inducing vibration pattern using the device.
